Social media is exciting. It changes rapidly, and as the years go on, things come in and go out of vogue. Staying on top of the latest features and trends is a full-time job in itself, but so necessary if you want to get the best results using social media. Because just between you and me, the social media strategy that pulled in HEAPS of followers and engagement in 2019 is going to really struggle in 2022.

But lucky for you, I’ve pulled together a list of the five areas you should be focusing your energy in 2022.

Instagram Reels

Instagram’s Adam Mosseri has already said it will ramp up its focus on reels and video content in 2022 – so go nuts! It’s not every day a social media company talks so openly about its algorithm, so when they tell you where they’re focusing their efforts, it’s an indication you should follow.

The success and popularity of reels (its biggest rival Tiktok) are really proof of how and why people are using the platform. It’s great entertainment, and people love watching them! So aim for entertainment when you’re creating them – think snappy, attention-grabbing video with an instant hook.

Jumping on board with trends – which sweep over Tiktok and Instagram and are changing all the time – and remember trending music and sounds will help your content boom.

Photo posts alone are no longer the answer. Integrating reels and video on Instagram is key to growth in 2022.

Instagram collaboration (shiny new feature)

This one could be a bit of a game-changer.

The collaboration feature will allow you to invite someone (think influencers, sister brands, friends) to co-author a feed post or reel, so they can share the content with their followers as well as yours.

Pretty cool, hey? If used properly, brands will get their story in front of new eyes!

As with any new feature, Instagram will push this to the moon; there are serious opportunities for early adopters (hint hint)

The best bit is the chance to get your name in front of engaged audiences to build your brand awareness and customer base. Pick your collab partner wisely.

All the forecasts are pointing in one direction – TikTok to become the largest social media platform in the world throughout 2022.

Not only are the hoighty toighty experts predicting it, but its user-base of 1.5 billion makes it hard to disagree with. TikTok feels more organic, and perhaps that’s what audiences are looking for.

It has a nice balance in that people use it both for entertainment and education- it’s isn’t just teenagers dancing anymore!

To sum it up, TikTok is only going up. It’s just a must-do for any brand or person looking to market via social media.

Diversification (using different platforms)

Think about your morning routine. If you’re a social media user, you don’t just go to Facebook. Or to Instagram. Or to TikTok.

You likely check all three, and if you’re like me, get sucked in before making a mad rush to get out the door/ to your computer in time for work.

Different audiences use different platforms and engage with different types of content.

With that said, don’t spread yourself too thin and feel like you need to become an expert in six or seven different platforms. Pick your best two or three and go from there, pouring your energy into mastering them.

Making and repurposing content so it is relevant for different platforms will save you time and make content creation easier.

Have a strategy

Planning is good in all aspects of life, especially when dealing with social media. There’s nothing more frustrating than a business with huge potential which doesn’t have a plan on social media. Here are some of the most important reasons why you need a concrete plan:

Know your people

Identify your customers and audience, how they live, how they think and behave online. If you don’t know who you’re talking to, the content you put out won’t shine if it’s not directed towards the right people.

Take the stress off

There’s nothing (and I mean nothing) more stressful than looking for social media content at the last minute to fill a hole. Planning weeks in advance, if possible, is the best way to go. With a proper content schedule and strategy, you’ll take away the overwhelm and make life a million times easier.

Know what to post

When you know why and what you need to be posting, social media becomes less daunting and more fun. But best of all it gets better results.

Using time wisely on social media is vital, especially as we come out of the COVID-19 pandemic and every other aspect of life takes off. Use your resources well, consider these tips and get yourself ready for a big 2022.
